Delaware has unclaimed money regulations which declare money, property, and other assets to be abandoned after a certain period of inactivity. Once this time period has passed, companies, banks and other financial institutions are required to turn this money over to the Delaware Bureau Of Unclaimed Property. By law, the unclaimed agency is required to send a notice to the last known address of the unclaimed money owner. In many cases, especially with death benefits, the person no longer resides at this address and the notice is returned to the state's unclaimed money office. In most states, the U.S. Government has one additional requirement they must fulfill. A public notice, usually in the form of a classified ad will list the unclaimed money owners name. Once this has been completed, if the rightful owner does not make a claim, the money will simply sit idle until the rightful owner or one of their heirs comes to make the claim.
Your unclaimed money search should include a complete database search of each state in which you or anyone you are searching for has ever lived or worked. In most cases, the property is turned over to the state in which it originated. Another trick is to pay close attention to where your employment company's home office is located. If you work only in Delaware, yet your companies office is located in another, it is wise to search all related states.
